What are Vitamins?

Vitamins are tiny but mighty nutrients that play a crucial role in keeping our bodies functioning at their best. They are essential for growth and development, maintaining good health, and preventing disease. But what exactly are vitamins and why do we need them?

Each vitamin plays a specific role in maintaining good health.

For example, vitamin A is important for vision and the immune system, while vitamin C helps the body produce collagen and protects cells from damage. Vitamin D, commonly known as the "sunshine vitamin," helps the body absorb calcium for strong bones and teeth.

Vitamin Solubility

There are two main types of vitamins:

  1. Fat-soluble: Fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, are stored in the body's fatty tissue and can accumulate to potentially harmful levels if taken in excess.
  2. Water-soluble: Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins B and C, are temporarily stored in the body and any excess is excreted in the urine, making it less likely to reach harmful levels.

Sources of Vitamins

Vitamins are found in a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. However, some people may not consume enough of certain vitamins through their diet and may need to take supplements.
